About the Upgrade

We will install our premium transformerless circuit. The MXL circuit board would be removed; we return it to you with the upgraded mic. Our circuit is based on the Schoeps CMC5, with numerous upgrades that we have been designing and optimizing over the past decade. This implementation contains many improvements over the original circuit topology.

This upgrade allows you to choose the mic's voicing, by selecting any of three large-diaphragm capsules: RK-47, RK-87, RK-12. Click for background information on capsule frequency response.

You can also choose whether you prefer the upgraded mic's internal switch to be a 10dB pad, or a Cardioid/Omni pattern switch.

Advise us of your two decisions after ordering the upgrade (via the service request form you'd include with the mic); we cannot finish the mic build without this information!

How It Works

Reserve your upgrade by ordering the service. Then ship your microphone to us. See the notes about that process here. We will contact you with the expected upgrade timeline and return shipping date once we've received your microphone.

Compatibility

This upgrade is compatible with the MXL 990.

We believe this mod is compatible with the MXL 990 XL.

It is not compatible with the MXL 990S or any other brand or model.

Costs

The mod service includes the new circuit and capsule, the labor costs for build/install/test, burn-in, and return shipping in the US.

This service is available to US residents only, or to people from other countries so long as the shipping address for the finished mic is within the United States.
